Hello.

I think I may have stumbled into the wrong forum by accident here, but I'm looking for my friend, George from Taekwondo who rehabilitates stray dogs and finds them homes.

On pages 3 and 4 of this linked thread is all the info I have about this little puppy who apparently likes to run with a pack... of cats.

Each race has it's hardships...the Iditarod has been around since 1973 where the Quest has only been around for the past 10 years or so....the Quest is strating to get the coverage that Iditarod has enjoyed for many years...and yes many mushers run both races...some have even ran both in the same year, one tough group of dog mushers...I am pretty sure the Quest has videos for sale on their web site....

It is true Iditarod alternates the route between the northern & Southern route..the reason ___ so the villages along the trail get to enjoy and participate in the race....the Yukon Quest alternates its start & finish so both Fairbanks and Whitehorse can share in the hoop-la at both ends....pretty cool....

What gets me is that he came to this site in the first place. Don't that make him even lamer than everyone else, due to the fact that he has no intrest in this?

My name is Tim. I am writing to you from Sioux Falls, SD.

I am the owner of a siberian husky just over one year old. Because I have a sled dog (that will probably never pull a sled) I have become extremely interested in the Iditarod and Yukon Quest sled dog races. I have read a few books on both races and was curious if you could provide me with a little insight with your own personal favorites.

The books I have read include:
Father of the Iditarod (awesome book)
Winterdance
Yukon Alone
Honest Dogs (great book)

Do you have any other selections that you recommend?

Thank you!

I think your teacher wanted you to look up the answers yourself, but I can give you some help...this is ONLY my opinion and not researched views:

Each race varies: There are sprint races (typically 8-25 miles with 2-3 day heats) these take up to 2-3 hours, mid distance races (typically 30-250 miles) up to 3 days and long distance races (typically 500-1200 miles) up to 9-15 days

Mushing is a safe sport as long as you are prepared and properly trained. Dangers are wide and the list could go on forever. The most common is head and knee injuries, and very good friend of mine was paralized when he hit a tree while on a practice run.

Dogs can also get injured - and die- that is a fact but not a common happening, the most common injury with dogs is torn pads on their feet, torn shoulders from dipping down into a soft snow spot, and wrist soreness.

Mush - The words is French-Canadian

Means - to go or travel by dog team over snow - it has also been used to speed up  a dog team, but  is almost never used as a command for a team to begin pulling.

Hope this helps
